In a powerful and emotionally charged rebuke, Joe Abraham, the father of a young woman tragically killed by an illegal immigrant, has called out major media outlets for their apparent disregard of President Donald Trump’s recent Angel Families Remembrance Ceremony. Abraham’s 20-year-old daughter, Katie, was killed last year when the vehicle she was in was rear-ended by Julio Cucul-Bol, a Guatemalan national with a Mexican alias who had been previously deported. Cucul-Bol, driving under the influence, caused a fatal crash that also took the life of 21-year-old Chloe Polzin. He was later sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges including aggravated DUI involving death and fleeing the scene. This heartbreaking story, Abraham argues, is just one of many that the media chooses to downplay or ignore.
Trump’s ceremony, held in the East Room of the White House, aimed to honor families like Abraham’s who have lost loved ones to crimes committed by illegal immigrants. For Abraham, the event was a rare moment when Angel Families were finally seen and acknowledged. Yet, major networks like CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, and MSNBC—outlets that often position themselves as champions of democracy—gave the ceremony minimal coverage. Why does this silence matter? Abraham asks. Because, he explains, when media institutions avoid addressing the uncomfortable consequences of immigration policy failures, those policies remain unchallenged, insulated, and normalized.
In a thought-provoking Substack post, Abraham highlights how Angel Families are often reduced to footnotes in the larger political narrative. Even when these stories are covered, they are frequently accompanied by disclaimers like ‘Crime happens everywhere’ or ‘Immigration status doesn’t define a person’—statements that, while technically true, divert attention from the core issue at hand.

The White House echoed Abraham’s frustration, with deputy assistant Kaelan Dorrto calling CNN’s lack of live coverage of the ceremony ‘sick and disgusting’. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt went further, accusing CNN of refusing to cover anything that doesn’t align with the Left’s narrative. CNN, however, defended its decision, stating it was focused on breaking news about a historic blizzard at the time of the event. But does one story justify ignoring another?
