In the world of iOS updates, Apple has surprised us yet again with iOS 26, introducing not one, but two brand new apps to the iPhone's Home Screen. Today, we're diving into the Preview app and exploring its impact on our daily iPhone and iPad usage.
Preview: A Mac-Inspired Hub for Visual Content
While Apple regularly enhances iOS with new features, the introduction of entirely new system apps is a rarer treat. iOS 26, however, brings us not just one but two: Preview and Apple Games. The Preview app, inspired by its Mac counterpart, offers a dedicated space for viewing and editing PDFs and images, now accessible on both iPhone and iPad.
Apple describes Preview as a versatile tool for creating quick sketches, editing PDFs and images, and marking them up with Apple Pencil or touch. Users can access all their PDFs and images from the Files app within Preview, create new pages, use Apple Pencil for drawing and writing, and even quickly fill out PDF forms with AutoFill.
My Journey with Preview: From Skepticism to Appreciation
I've been exploring Preview since the initial iOS and iPadOS 26 betas last June. Initially, I questioned its value, wondering how it could enhance the Files app's capabilities. However, over time, I've come to appreciate having Preview as a standalone app.
The Benefits of a Dedicated Preview App
Prior to iOS 26, PDFs and images saved in the Files app would open directly within it. However, most other file types open in separate, dedicated apps. For instance, Pages, Keynote, and Numbers documents, while saved in Files, launch within their respective apps.
The Preview app offers several advantages in iOS 26. Firstly, it simplifies managing multiple documents on your iPhone and iPad. Recently, as part of a home-buying process, I've had to deal with an unusually high number of documents, and iOS 26 has made it easier to access and view these PDFs on my iPhone.
This is partly due to the Files app's 'Quick Look' function. Even though PDFs now open in Preview by default, you can still view them directly in Files via Quick Look. This means you can have one PDF open in Preview and another in Files, allowing for quick switching between the two via the app switcher. It makes multitasking feel more seamless and efficient.
I've also found Preview on iPad to be incredibly useful, especially when combined with the new iPadOS 26 windowing system. I've set up unique window arrangements for Preview and Files, with Preview occupying a large window on the left side of the screen and Files in a narrow window on the right. This setup allows me to view a PDF in Preview while simultaneously navigating my Files database, making it easier to hop between different documents.
Preview offers a more comprehensive and accessible set of tools for editing PDFs, feeling much closer to the Mac's Preview app. I've been utilizing new and existing features to add and remove pages from PDFs, sign documents with Markup, fill out PDFs, and more.
The flexibility of using Preview and Files together, along with an expanded toolset, has made Preview a valuable addition to both iPhone and iPad.
